Ready to fall in love with cauliflower? Try the delicious roasted flavor of this Grilled Cauliflower Steaks Recipe!
Normally I avoid cooked cauliflower (preferring to eat it raw) but after trying grilled cauliflower during a trip to Nicaragua I was hooked! After returning home we tried several recipes to recreate our new favorite side to grilled steak, chicken, or fish.
Grilled Cauliflower Steaks Recipe
Cauliflower, 1 head, large
Olive Oil or Coconut Oil, 2 Tablespoons
Salt and Pepper, to taste
Brown Sugar, 1 Tablespoon
Cut Cauliflower Into Steaks
Wash the cauliflower removing any lower leaves but keeping the stem intact. Using a large knife cut the cauliflower into large 3/4 inch slabs. A few of the florets may fall off. If they are large enough you can grill those too! If they are small enough to fall through the grates then save for eating raw.
Oil and Season The Cauliflower
Brush each side of the cauliflower steaks with the oil and freshly ground salt and pepper. Evenly sprinkle the brown sugar over the top of the cauliflower. This creates a beautiful caramel coloring during the grilling process. You can also try adding one of the different seasoning options mentioned below based on your preferences.
Grill The Cauliflower Steaks
Place the cauliflower steaks on a preheated gas or charcoal grill. Watch carefully and turn after about 4 – 5 minutes then finish the other side until there are nice grill marks and the cauliflower is al dente (about another 3 minutes).
If the steaks have enough grill marks but still aren’t done you can move to an upper rack to finish. Be careful to not overcook. Nobody likes mushy cauliflower.
Different Seasoning Options For Grilled Cauliflower
This recipe is great as-is but it’s also easy to adapt. Just add your favorite seasoning to the oil before brushing the cauliflower and placing on the grill.
Cajun – Add a teaspoon of New Orleans Style Cajun or Creole seasoning (garlic, paprika, onion, red pepper, etc)
Asian – Add a teaspoon of soy sauce, 1 teaspoon of hot mustard, and 1/2 teaspoon of sesame oil.
Montreal – Add a teaspoon of Montreal Steak Seasoning (or similar mix).
Garlic – Add two cloves of freshly minced garlic. If you allow the garlic to sit in the olive oil over night it will really infuse the flavor.
Italian – Add a tablespoon of freshly minced basil and/or oregano.
Lemon Zest – Add the juice from 1/2 of a squeezed lemon along with a small amount of zest from grating the lemon rind.
Cheesy – After grilling the cauliflower sprinkle the top with your favorite cheese right before removing from the grill. Great options include Parmesan, Pepper Jack, or Cheddar.
Grilled vegetables are a favorite of summer barbeques and now cauliflower can take its place alongside corn, potatoes, zucchini and other staples for roasted vegies!
